Primer two tasked us to design a homeless shelter for a chosen client. My chosen client was a young busker who became homeless due to financial difficulties. As such, I designed a shelter that the busker can use to not only live but also work and play.

The shelter comprises of three main areas, the ablution area, sleeping area and the working area.

The spaces are layered such that the stage is the most public area and it is closest to the road. The ablution area is at the back, making it more private and it also acts as a buffer for noise. The resting area is also at the back since its private and the area is ventilated through louvres.

The stage at the front of the shelter is cantilevered and it provides an informal space where the busker is able to perform and interact with the public, allowing him to reintegrate with society.

The design was derived from the pushing and pulling of a 3m by 3m grid. After grouping the zones in a particular manner according to the site, the zones were shifted apart from one another.

Then the zones were manipulated in 3D using a massing model. Through the massing, I tried to make the stage area the most prominent area and the private areas more secluded. The quality of the spaces in the massing model was also studied through sectional diagrams.

The massing model was then refined to lines and planes models. In the lines and planes models, openings and the overall architectural language of the shelter was explored. I mainly focused on the expression of the stage area and how it can be made to be more prominent.

In the later stages, a skylight highlighting the main circulation path was added. The skylight also allowed more natural light to enter the shelter.
